War in the Middle East: a global shockwave
Submitted by mariaWar in the Middle East: a global shockwave
It has been a dozen days since the Israeli-American offensive against Iran plunged the Middle East into war. Despite the assassination of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the Islamic regime of the mullahs, although greatly weakened and isolated, has not yet capitulated: it has appointed his son, Mojtaba Khamenei, as the new supreme leader and is waging war on all fronts, setting the entire region ablaze, particularly the Gulf countries. Its survival is a major regional issue for its proxies, Hamas, Hezbollah, the Houthis and the Iraqi Shiite militias. Thus, the war has once again spread to Lebanon, where Israel, in response to Hezbollah strikes, now wishes to ‘expand its operations’ and invade territories. In just a few days, there have been more than 500 deaths, hundreds of injuries, at least 750,000 displaced persons and the beginning of a humanitarian crisis.
On an even larger scale, Iran’s strategic obstruction of the Strait of Hormuz, where oil tankers are no longer able to pass due to Iranian mines and the risk of attacks, is threatening the global economy and causing gas and oil prices to rise worldwide.
