War doesn’t take holidays
Submitted by mariaWar doesn’t take holidays
Summer is here, and with it the review of a year marked by war. The re-election in January of Donald Trump, who had promised to restore peace to the world, has only made the situation worse. In Ukraine, negotiations are at a standstill, and Vladimir Putin has found new and unexpected support in the White House and among certain European leaders. In the Middle East, the plight of civilians in Gaza continues to outrage the world, but Israel persists in destroying the enclave. In the meantime, the Hebrew state has opened up other fronts in the region, and there is a constant threat of conflagration.
In Sudan, the DRC, India, Korea and Taiwan, civil and border conflicts are multiplying, and international institutions seem incapable of dissuading states from resorting to force to settle their differences. Even Europe is rearming and increasing its military budgets. Over the last twelve months, war has almost overshadowed other no less urgent issues, such as the fight against global warming and the ecological transition, which have been largely sacrificed. We hope that when the new academic year starts in September, cartoonists will be able to draw something other than tanks, bombs and doves. Have a good summer!
