China-US summit: reconciliation and pressure tactics

Editorial published on May 15, 2026

Donald Trump visited Xi Jinping in Beijing between 13 and 15 May for a crucial summit between the world’s two leading powers. “This is a historic visit that will go down in history,” said the Chinese leader, which led to “extremely positive and productive” discussions, according to Trump. After months of a trade war and escalating tensions, the two countries reached trade agreements in several areas and called for greater stability.

The war in Iran also featured prominently in the discussions. Donald Trump, who is seeking a way out of the war he himself launched, secured a call from Xi Jinping for a swift ceasefire and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. However, Beijing has taken advantage of its position of strength vis-à-vis a Trump who is weakened – economically, militarily and politically – to assert its own interests. Xi Jinping notably threatened the United States with “conflict” should it intervene against the forced “reunification” of Taiwan.
