Europe confronts Putin’s hybrid warfare

Editorial published on October 02, 2025

Leaders from the European Union and other regional allies such as the United Kingdom and Ukraine have been meeting in Copenhagen since Wednesday 1 October to discuss defence against the ‘hybrid warfare’ (drone intrusions, disinformation, cyberattacks, sabotage, destabilisation operations, etc.) waged by Russia against Europe. Denmark has been overflown by drones in recent days and has closed several airports, including Copenhagen. In recent weeks, Poland, Estonia and Romania have also spotted and sometimes shot down Russian drones over their territory. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and Ursula Von der Leyen are calling for a strong response to these incursions, for which the Kremlin denies any responsibility, and the 27 are even discussing the establishment of an anti-drone wall.

Whether this is a real escalation, as Zelensky warns, a diversionary tactic from the Ukrainian front, as other European leaders claim, or a test of NATO’s response capabilities, the EU must find ways to defend itself against a new and unconventional form of warfare.

Cartooning for Peace / Editos / UN: an intense week of diplomacy

UN: an intense week of diplomacy

Editorial published on September 26, 2025

It began on Monday 22 September with the French President’s solemn speech on the recognition of Palestine, in accordance with the peace and security plan drawn up by Saudi Arabia and France. This initiative was followed by ten other countries*, bringing the total number of UN member states recognising Palestine as a sovereign state to 158 (out of a total of 193). Faced with the urgent need to stop the carnage in Gaza and free the hostages, ‘the time has come,’ Emmanuel Macron repeated in his speech.

The contrast was striking with US President Donald Trump’s speech the following day. Lambasting the UN institution he despises and blames for all evils (even its mechanical maintenance problems), he also launched into a vulgar and mendacious tirade against Europe, migrants and the climate crisis, which he considers ‘the greatest scam in the history of mankind’.
