3 May marks World Press Freedom Day, one of the core causes championed by Cartooning for Peace. The findings of Reporters Without Borders (RSF), which has just published its latest World Press Freedom Index, are unprecedented: “More than half of the world’s countries are in a ‘difficult’ or ‘very serious’ situation […] In 25 years, the average score for all countries surveyed has never been so low […] Journalism is being criminalised on an international scale […] The exploitation of increasingly restrictive laws is eroding the right to information, even within democracies.”
Wherever press freedom declines, democracy and human rights decline too. This is why Cartooning for Peace is focusing on three key initiatives:
