Hungary has chosen Europe

The general election on Sunday 12 April 2026 marks a historic turning point for Hungary, with the downfall of Viktor Orbán after 16 years of illiberal, authoritarian rule – and, moreover, one that was complicit with the Kremlin. JD Vance’s endorsement, just days before the vote, did him no favours. Buoyed by a record turnout of 80% (particularly among young people), Peter Magyar’s opposition Tisza party won 53% of the vote, securing nearly two-thirds of the seats in Parliament. A former establishment figure and pro-European conservative, Magyar built his success on a promise of change, economic recovery and the fight against corruption. Whilst maintaining Hungary’s refusal to send weapons to Ukraine, he has pledged – unlike his predecessor – to be a “loyal member” of the European Union and to support the “attacked” Ukrainian people. He also stated on Wednesday that his country would lift its veto to unblock the €90 billion European loan to Kyiv. EU leaders have unanimously hailed this as a victory for democracy and European values.
