Elon Musk quits DOGE and returns to business

Editorial published on June 04, 2025

Elon Musk stepped down from his duties in Washington on May 30th, after having been the other central figure in Donald Trump’s campaign and early months of his presidency. As head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), Elon Musk set himself the goal of chainsawing through government spending deemed unnecessary. His $2 trillion savings target, revised downward several times, was never reached. DOGE has a savings record of $175 billion, reduced to less than ten according to some sources, taking into account the chaos caused by indiscriminate cuts and thousands of layoffs.

After this unsuccessful sabotage, the richest man in the world will return to managing his businesses, including Tesla, which has seen its sales plummet in recent months. Politics and business don’t always mix well. He assured that he will remain “a friend and advisor” to Donald Trump, despite calling his new budget plan announced earlier this week “a disgusting abomination.” Elon Musk’s inconsistency, eccentricity, and hyperactivity also seem to fit in with the revelations in the New York Times, in a May 30 article, about his unbridled consumption of various drugs, which he denies.
