3 May, World Press Freedom Day
Submitted by maria3 May, World Press Freedom Day
Press freedom is under threat. In historically repressive countries, of course, but also in democratic regimes where censorship, fake news and attacks on journalists are on the increase. In 2024, 124 journalists were killed (nearly two-thirds of them Palestinians).
Cartooning for Peace is mobilising more than ever, alongside its many partners, to raise awareness of these worrying threats to press freedom by taking an active part in several initiatives throughout May: the CARICARTOONS awareness-raising campaign, UNESCO’s World Press Freedom Day devoted to the impact of AI on information, the forthcoming Cocobulles Festival in Côte d’Ivoire, which is warning against the scourge of disinformation, etc.
Defending cartoonists under threat is one of Cartooning for Peace’s main missions, and the organisation works on a daily basis to support and accompany cartoonists, as well as to raise awareness of cases.
